#11: I've only instructed in multiengine aircraft in the military (C-130s). The Flight Instructor certificate I get from the MCI test will get me Flight Instructor "Airplane Multiengine" and "Instrument Airplane", but not "Airplane Single Engine". How do I get Airplane Single Engine so I can teach my son to fly in our C-172? Here's what you do. (Yes, having multiengine instruction privileges does NOT allow you to instruct in single engine aircraft.)

AFTER getting your new Flight Instructor Certificate via military competency, you need to take a flight instructor added rating checkride to add "Airplane Single Engine" to the back of your new Flight Instructor certificate... but there are different requirements depending on your specific situation. Here are three common possibilities:

Possibility 1: You have a commercial pilot certificate for multiengine, and private pilot privileges or less for single engine. You will need to take a commercial pilot checkride for airplane single engine to add those privileges to your pilot certificate. Then you can take the added rating checkride for flight instructor airplane single engine to add that rating to your flight instructor certificate.

Possibility 2: You have an ATP certificate for multiengine, and private pilot privileges or less for single engine. You should take the ATP checkride for airplane single engine to add those privileges to your pilot certificate (no written test, just the checkride). Then you can take the added rating checkride for flight instructor airplane single engine to add that rating to your flight instructor certificate.

Possibility 3: You happen to already have ATP or Commercial privileges on your pilot certificate for airplane single engine. You can take the added rating checkride for flight instructor airplane single engine to add that rating to your flight instructor certificate.
